A very small, but appreciative, audi ence greeted Madame Oarreno s Opera Troupe on their first visit to this jcity last evening. The troupe is composed of artists of rare talent and ability. We regret exceedingly that tne language at our command is inadequate to give ex pression to our delight. Mdme. Carrcno is undoubtedly the finest performer on the piano forte we have ever listened to. Her touch was music in itself, and her expression difficult to realize. She is perfectly natural and plays without flour ishes or affectation. Signor Stantini's tine tenor delighted the , audience, and Signor Tagliapietro's superb and beauti ful baritone held his listeners spell bound. Miss Underbill's soprano abouud3 in sweetness and bird like melody. Her staccato passages were verv fine. Miss Roderick has one of the sweetest contraltos we have ever heard n.nd has it well under control. Each vocalist was compelled to answer encores and Madame Carreno was complimented with prolonged applause. The evening's enjoyment closed with the Fourth Act of Verdi's IlTrovatore and was well worth the price of admission. We will prom ise Manager Grau a large and flatter ing audience upon his next visit. It was unfortunate that his date in this city should have fallen during Lent; other wise he would have been greeted by a much larger audience. The Minstrels To-Night- Arlington's minstrels arrived in this city this morning and will give an enter tainment to-night. They are well spoken of by the press and come to us with the following endorsement from the Charles ton Neivs and Courier: Arlington's minstrels gave one of the best variety entertainments, at the Academy of Music last evening, ever seen in Charleston. The house was well filled, the audience being largely com posed of ladies and children. '1 he troupe consists of twentv-four members, and the entertainment includes singing, solo playing, negro minstrelsy, clog dancing and laughable farces. The jokes were fresh, the dancing rern-rkably fane, and the farces running over witn laugnier, Hnnift of the voices in the troupe are ex cellent, and the choruses were finely given. Mr. W. H. Clark sang a pathetic little song, called the "Cradle's Empty," with touching eilect, ana repeated it three times to as many enthusiastic en cores. Mr. Herman has a fine bas3 and sansr with marked effect. The cornet solos, by Mr. Harry Hardy, were gracefully played, and tne narmonican solo3,by Mr. Thomas xoung, were won derful. The humorous orauou uy jii. Arlington, and the banjo music, by the same amusing artist, and his little aog "Dot," were rapturously applauded. The farce of "The Sausage Makers" was a most amusing conclusion for what was ia every respect a delightful entertainment.
